Three Liverpool players, including England midfielder Fara Williams, are set to miss the majority of the club's remaining games this season after picking up injuries.

Manager Matt Beard told BBC Sport that Williams and Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala would miss "a couple of months" with hamstring and knee problems.

Defender Satara Murray (also hamstring) is expected to be out of action for about six weeks.

"It's a big blow," said Beard.

"It's the spine of your team - your central midfielder, your centre-back and your centre-forward - but it's one of those things."

The players were all hurt during Saturday's WSL 1 defeat by Notts County and did not feature in Thursday's 2-0 Continental Tyres Cup victory against Everton.

Williams played in all seven of England's matches at the recent World Cup, but Beard said her injury was not caused by returning to league action too soon following the tournament in Canada.

"It was an impact injury," he said. "Unfortunately as she's tried to win the ball, her leg's completely hyperextended, which has caused the injury."

Liverpool are the reigning Women's Super League One champions but are currently only sixth in the table after a disappointing start to the season.

With the league concluding in October, Beard admitted that the new injuries would make defending their title even more difficult.

"They're important players to us but it's going to give maybe one or two of the younger players an opportunity," he continued.

"We'll do as much as we can, while we're still involved in everything mathematically, to finish as high as we can."

Beard also told BBC Sport that he did not think he would be in a position to make emergency loan signings to cover for the injured players.

Is there any word yet on Bonner's injury from last night? It's bad enough not having Murray available, we can't have both CBs missing.

If Bonner is fit, who do you think Beard will partner her with in the back?

He started with a back five against Everton: Harris, Bonner, Easton, Longhurst, Pacheco. He has done this quite a bit over the last two seasons, it seems like it's his go-to formation whenever an injury crisis hits. If Bonner is fit I can see it being repeated, but perhaps with the introduction of Ryland somewhere and at some point because she is coming back from injury now. If Bonner isn't fit I don't know what he would do. He left it as a back four when she went off injured against Everton but I doubt that would be strong enough to start games.

Bonner is starting against Birmingham today. Let's hope she is fine and it isn't a patch her up and send her out anyway job.

Looks like he stayed with Longhurst.  She's seems to be doing a good job, hoping that her more attacking mindset doesn't get her into trouble. The back four seem to be holding their own in this game but our forwards need to start finishing their chances to ease the pressure.  Stout is solid she's really growing into a great goalie.

Does anyone know when Schroder is going to be back?  It seems like she's been out forever.

She has been on the bench for the last two games now including today. So she can't be that far off. Unless we really as just putting players on the bench to make it look like we have one Laughing

Schroder played the last 10-15 minutes today. She came on for Longhurst. I'm sure I can remember her playing as a CB before now when we needed a gap filling. It might have been in a back five though. So she is another who could end up being Murray's replacement.

I'm glad there is Bristol this season or we could be in some serious trouble of relegation. The only silver lining in this injury saga is that it will give valuable experience to our youngsters. I'd imagine that the girls haven't had that much time to train together without the injured trio since it happened last Sunday with a game on Thursday and today. Hopefully with more time together with players shuffled into their new positions and whatever we'll see a better team performance for the next league game. The pressure is totally off them now so I hope they can work as a team and nick a few wins.

If we are going to go with the 'heads up and carry on' train of thought I would much rather we aim for those wins to be in the Conti Cup where they would still count for something. There is no point overexerting a paper thin squad trying to get what are ultimately meaningless results in the league when we could instead be concentrating on the one trophy we can still win and making sure we are in the best possible shape for the CL. Given the probable likelihood that we won't be qualifying for that again, we could really do with making it through both the R32 and R16 so we can at least wave a CL quarterfinal at prospective off-season signings.

Fair point. We are in a tough group for the Continental though but maybe Beard will aim to do well in the Cup as well as wins against Bristol. I was really hoping for a good run in the CL but it will all be dependent on our draw, especially if Fara and Oshala's recovery takes longer than expected.

Seeded protection should help us to some extent this year. UEFA are also seeding the R16 for the first time as well (though I'm not sure how that works exactly). So even if the likes of Fara and Oshoala do return late and miss the R32, we could in theory, with the help of seeded protection, be given a nice draw and avoid anybody decent until they do finally get back. There is a month between the R32 and the R16; you would think that is plenty of extra time to be ready for the R16 at least.

R32 should be easy beside the Norwegian entry LSK Kvinner, the other 14 sides should be easy to beat ( Chelsea are not seeded but cannot draw Liverpool).

R16 will be more difficult as the top 8 sides only will be seeded and if there is no upset, the top 5 teams are really strong.

The rankings were interesting (thanks for posting them) it looks like we have a good chance of getting through at least the first round this time. One concern I have is if we do concentrate on the Continental Cup the final and our first round of CL's will be close together time wise. I really rate our crop of girls and think that we have a lot of potential. I'm hoping that they can really pull together in the next few weeks. However, I think that to go far in the CL Beard is going need to strengthen our defense in the off season.

He must now surely be seeing the merits of having a proper third option CB for examples sake. I can't really remember us having more than two at any one time who were actually used. I'm amazed we got away it for as long as we did. When Bonner went off against Everton I couldn't help but think we deserved to be without both her and Murray for pushing our luck for two and half seasons. Though she does however appear to be fine, thankfully.

That's a tad harsh.  I do think that in the past Beard has relied too heavily on Easton to plug up the injures in our defense.  While she's a great player for a stop gap she's not ideal as a continuous fix and you're right we need anothet dependable centre back on the roster.  I think now until the end of the season every knock that Bonner gets, Liverpool fans as a whole will hold their breath until we know she's fine. Laughing

I don't know what Easton's plans are but she surely won't be here to plug holes for much longer, so that's at least one imminent defensive arrival on the cards and hopefully it will bring cover at CB. We have good numbers at fullback though (even if injury has been an issue there) so I can't see much changing unless players leave. I expect Harris and Pacheco would stay but the other two I'm not so sure on.

I am thinking it might be the end of a cycle at Liverpool and maybe a new manager and new players might come in for next season ?

The majority of what remains of the original 2013 overhaul squad were all up for contract renewals last winter and most stayed. We never got told the length of all their extensions though. But even if some of the extensions run for multiple seasons it still leaves the potential for a good chunk of the squad to be out of contract at the end of this one.

I think I read that Beard got 2.5 years on his first contract to give him two full seasons after joining mid-way through 2012, which means he also must have renewed last winter since he is still here. But again, no word on how long the extension was for.

The squad is really stretched at the moment and there’s no real light at the end of the tunnel. Corina is going for a scan because we don’t know what her problem is but she keeps breaking down. Satara is back but we need to manage her and we can’t rush that. Asisat will need another scan before we know how long she will be out and Fara will be at least another four weeks. http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/liverpool-fc-ladies-face-italian-9897633

At least another month for Fara could mean she only has two league games and a possible Conti QF before the away leg against Bresica. Not exactly a lot of time to get her up to speed and that is best case scenario as well. The update on Oshoala doesn't sound too promising either.

I didn't/don't expect either Fara or Asisat to be back before the end of the season. It's a shame about Corina, she's been out practically the whole season and it would be nice to have her experience in the defense. IMO this win has secured our staying up and I think with Satara coming back slowly and our forwards doing well we have a shot at going far in the Conti Cup and winning the first round in the CL. Hopefully by that time Fara and Asisat will be fit for the next round in the CL and winning back the title next year.

Our youth have done great this season and I'm proud of how they stepped up during others injuries and Stainforth is getting into form nicely. I don't see great changes in the squad or the manager in the future but I guess one never knows in football.

I still remember Beards' comment from two(?) winters ago when he said he wanted quality over quantity, and while it is the right way to go about things, it bit us on the arse when the injuries left us barebones for the first half of 2014. We obviously didn't add the missing quantity for this season because we are barebones again. It is there in some positions, but not all, and typically the injuries have mostly and hit where it isn't.

It is always hard to foresee outgoings, but I do think incomings of the addition variety as opposed to the replacement variety will be the main focus. Nothing in the current squad needs changing so I don't expect anybody to leave unless they want to. We just need bolstering with numbers. The amount of trimming and molding done to it over the last couple of years should really mean we have now reached the point where it is possible to fit in quality in quantity. But of course that always depends on budgets.

That's interesting about quality over quantity because in theory it's a good idea unless a key person(s) gets injured. And that's what frustrates me the most about Beard is his lack of depth in certain areas, namely the midfield and centre-back positions and his stockpiling of forwards (we have like six at the moment). He never adequately replaced Fors or Dacosta so when Fara got injured we were in a bad way. I rate Zelem and Dale has potential but their both young and need consistent experience around them and they're not getting that from Staniforth or Katrin who are both coming off injury themselves. Also why he hasn't added depth to our CB's is beyond me. I like White but he should have signed a defender not a forward because while a defender might not win you games they go a long way at helping you not lose them. A couple of draws instead of loses after the world cup break would have us sitting in a different position in the league table at the moment.

Fara mentioned in the pre-match talk on BT that she was about 4 or 5 weeks out - she mentioned her priority is getting fit for the Champions league games.
