Head coach Mark Sampson wants England to follow up their most successful Women's World Cup campaign with the European Championship title in 2017.

The Lionesses beat Germany in the third-place play-off in Canada to finish behind champions the USA and runners-up Japan.

England start their Euro qualification with a trip to Estonia in September.

"People have said to me: 'We're the best in Europe now, we should go and win the Euros in 2017," said Sampson.

"It's not as easy as that, but I'm clear with the vision I need with the team come 2017.

"We've got to work back from that, putting steps in place to make sure that the team's in the best possible place to give themselves a chance of winning it - and that will be our objective."

Sampson is urging the Football Association to help him produce the strongest possible national team.

"There's a responsibility on myself and the FA to make sure we get the matches we need to allow this team to grow," he said. "We've got to make sure we play against the best teams in the world on a regular basis.

"We've got to go to places we've never been before - like Asia, for instance. We've got to play in more tournaments like the Cyprus Cup. We've got to give these players the best possible chance."

Sampson is also hoping that his own future as head coach will continue beyond its current term.

There has been post-World Cup speculation that the 32-year-old Welshman might be lured away to a new position, but he insisted: "I've made it clear that I'd love the opportunity to take this team to another World Cup.

"My contract goes up to the end of the Euros, and I'm really hopeful that someone will offer me the opportunity to go to another World Cup.

"That decision is up to the FA, so I'll do what I'm told. At the moment that's working with the team, preparing as best as I possibly can for the European Championship."

What tournaments other than the Cyprus Cup is he talking about? There is only the Algarve Cup and you can't do both. We would surely have to create additional tournaments before we could play in them and I don't see that happening due to practicalities. Simple friendlies are much easier to arrange.

possibly olympics...even though it's a combination of countries, not just England, it's still a tournament at international level playing against best in the world.

But politics mean that won't happen this time round at least.

If he is talking about the Olympics that tournament would be beneficial on multiple fronts, but it would take a pretty huge shift in stance for it happen. Though I suppose we do have four years to work on it. But we should of course have been working on it for the last four years so that it happened in 2016.

I wonder if he is pushing for us to play the USA in thier "victory tour".  Winning the Euro 2017 is going to be difficult, I personally want us to play more friendlies with the top European teams away. It would also be great if we could have a short tournament in Asia with the top teams in Asia and Austaralia.

If the Olympics never happens again for us that would leave us with two empty summers in every four-year cycle. It shouldn't be out of the question for us to group up with other countries who also have an empty summer for a series of friendlies. One of those two years would be empty for everybody meaning all the top teams should be free, the other could be a little weak though with the better teams off at the Olympics. It's just a question of the FA wanting to organise something like that when they are already organising the Cyprus Cup. And I'm sure the WSL managers would hate it.

I thought that rumour had been rubbished already? The denial might be a bluff I suppose. But either way I don't see any gap in our calendar for us to go over there as part of their tour. Just a regular friendly at any point could be workable though.

The fact that we aren't going to the Olympics will make us prime opposition for anybody wanting an Olympic-warm up match. Our Euros qualifiers will take up a fair few of our international windows though.
